For stroke survivors with aphasia (SWA), language recovery is highly variable given the extent to which damage may exist in multiple neighboring brain regions. For African American SWA, social determinants of health also contribute to stroke recovery and aphasia rehabilitation, and SLPs can play a vital role in ensuring health equity. This session discusses evidence-based practices that holistically support neurorehabilitation for African American SWA, focusing on assessment, intervention, and culturally competent service provision that targets health-related quality of life and health literacy.

This course is a recorded session from the 2021 online conference “Empowered SLPs in Health Care: Breaking Barriers and Shaping Solutions.”

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • adapt evaluations to a client’s needs by identifying social determinants of health within the SLP scope of practice
  • modify intervention plans to meet the client’s needs using impairment-level components of the WHO ICF and the relationship between environmental and personal factors in the intervention
  • tailor communication to the needs and characteristics of the client based on components of health-related quality of life in African American stroke survivors with aphasia
